Why String Theory?

Primarily a history of where string theory came from, and how it came to be as popular as it is with theoretical & mathematical physicists. Includes a brief description of the basic physics of the theory and its relation to general relativity and quantum mechanics.

Tim Thompson

Tim Thompson earned his M.S. degree in physics from California State University Los Angeles in 1987, and spent his professional career in the JPL Science Division 1981-2008 (retired), where his experience included physics & chemistry of planetary atmospheres, and radio & infrared astronomy, notably with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Tim has put in ten years as President of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, and about 25 of the last 30 on the society's Board of Directors. Tim is a co-founder of the docent & session director programs at Mount Wilson Observatory, and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mount Wilson Institute. Tim has received two NASA Group Achievement Awards, a JPL/NASA Center Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, and the 2015 G. Bruce Blair Medal from the consortium of Western Amateur Astronomers.
