The Incredible Indonesian Total Solar Eclipse of 9 March 2016

On Wednesday, March 9th of this year, a total solar eclipse made its way across the Pacific Ocean, starting at dawn just west of the large island of Sumatra in the nation of Indonesia, traversing the majority of the island chain of that country, and concluding at sunset in the northeastern Pacific, some 1200 km north of the Hawaiian Islands.
OCA members Joel Harris and Don Sabers were among a small group of intrepid eclipse enthusiasts, who traveled nearly some 15,000 km to intercept the lunar shadow and observe this final total eclipse of the sun prior to the “Great American Eclipse” next August 21st, 2017.
The hearty band of 20 amateur astronomers was based on Bangka Island, the same venue where Joel observed the last total eclipse to cross Indonesia on March 18th, 1988.
Joel and Don will be sharing their experiences on that trip, from both a "travelogue perspective" and an observational point of view as well, detailing the various sites and places they visited on the trip, and sharing their photographic images of the eclipse event.
Come join the OCA on Friday, November the 11th, as these two highly experienced solar eclipse veterans share their story of the "Incredible Indonesian Solar Eclipse of 9 March 2016".

Joel K. Harris

Joel Harris is an adjunct professor at Cal State University Los Angeles in the electrical engineering and computer science department, where he instructs graduate level classes in systems engineering, system risk analysis, reliability of systems, and engineering finance.
He is a graduate of the LMU Systems Engineering program, where he earned his M.S. degree in 2008. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from DeVry Institute of Technology (1997), as well as Business Administration and MBA degrees from U.S.C. (1972 and 1973, respectively).
Joel is a veteran of 19 total solar eclipses, having pursued/chased these events starting back in 1973, as part of a scientific investigation team working under the late, great American solar astronomer, Donald Menzel, of Harvard Observatory. He was part of an expedition mounted by Educational Expeditions International, now Earthwatch Institute. For over two weeks, that team lived in the Sahara Desert, in the nation of Mauritania, preparing for the nearly 7-minute eclipse that occurred on 30 June that year.
He is the lead author, along with Richard Talcott of Astronomy magazine, of "Chasing the Shadow – An Observer’s Guide to Eclipses", published by Kalmbach Publishers in 1994.
Most recently, Joel led a group of 20 amateur astronomers to Bangka Island, Indonesia where they successfully observed the early morning total eclipse of March 9th of this year.
The next total solar eclipse in his sights will take he and over 250 other eclipse fanatics to Casper, WY, for the "Great American Eclipse" of August 21st, 2017 …
A native Californian, Joel lives in Westlake Village with his wife Patti, their two dogs Bailey and Sadie, along with Joel’s two cats, Tabitha and Cassiopeia.

Don Sabers

OCA member Don Sabers has been doing astro-photography on and off for more than 35 years. He started as an guide assistant to oca member Ron Royer, assisting in guiding for his tri-color plates. 33 years ago he attended and photographed his first total solar eclipse in Surabaya Indonesia. In march of this year Don traveled with Ron Royer and Twilight Tours once again to Indonesia to witness and photograph another total solar eclipse. Don’s images have been see on KABC news and the teams composite image of this years total solar eclipse was just published in astronomy magazine and will be featured on the cover of sky and telescopes upcoming annual issue of sky watch which will be featuring details on the 2017 great American eclipse.

"What's Up?" in this month will be presented by Steve Condrey
