One People, One Sky

One People, One Sky

Our world supports six billion people in nearly 200 countries and speaking more than 6,000 languages. Yet for all our cultural and genetic diversity, we share one remarkable thing in common: the sky. Join Dennis Mammana for a truly global view of the heavens like you've never seen before -- through the spectacular photos of some of the most highly acclaimed night sky photographers on our planet. And learn why, for all our diversity, we really are one people, one sky.

Dennis Mammana

For more than three decades, Dennis Mammana has delivered the wonder and mystery of the cosmos to millions around the world. He is the author of six books, hundreds of popular magazine, encyclopedia and web articles and, since 1992, has written "Stargazers"-the only nationally-syndicated weekly newspaper column on astronomy. In addition to leading public tours around the world to view and photograph celestial events, he also teaches workshops on a variety of astronomy photography topics. His stunning sky photos have earned him a coveted membership in TWAN (The World At Night)-an international team of the world's most highly-acclaimed night sky photographers. You can enjoy his work online at DennisMammana.com, or join his official Facebook page at

"What's Up?" in this month will be presented by Chris Butler

Desert Night Sky Photography (special offer for Orange County Astronomers)

With beautiful weather approaching, I’d like to invite my friends at OCA to a unique Night Sky Photography workshop at a significantly reduced rate.

I’m offering this full-day/evening hands-on program for $45 per person (regularly $60), with a minimum of 15 pre-registered students. And, while I can’t promise success, I’ll try to arrange a discounted rate for those who wish to spend the night.

If you enjoy photography and are fascinated by the spectacular desert night sky, this hands-on course is for you! During the afternoon, students will discover how to use their cameras to create stunning celestial portraits. After a dinner break, we'll set out for a scenic desert location (weather permitting, of course) to practice shooting the night sky. (See the flier below)

The workshop will be held in Borrego Springs—California’s first and only International Dark Sky Community—where you can find plenty of lodging, camping, restaurants and more, not to mention beautiful scenery both on the ground and in the sky.

Weekend dates are quite limited so I’m suggesting October 23—just past full moon so the moonlight will contribute just enough foreground light during early evening hours—from 12 noon – about 9 p.m.

If anyone has any questions, please contact me. Pre-registration and payment must be received no later than Saturday, October 16. Final details will then be e-mailed to all participants. Send the name(s), e-mail addresses and phone numbers of those interested, along with a check or money order to:

Dennis Mammana
P.O. Box 2071
Borrego Springs, CA 92004-2071

In the meantime, I hope you’ll attend the monthly meeting on Friday, September 17 when I’ll show some of the world’s most spectacular night sky photography, and offer tips on how you, too might accomplish similar images. And please visit me online at www.dennismammana.com or at www.twanight.org to see even more examples of night sky shots possible with only a camera and tripod!
