Robert Buchheim

"The evidence of things not seen"

Amateur astronomers are assisting the professional astronomical community by providing data for a variety of projects ranging from the solar system, to stellar systems, to cosmology. I'll weave together two themes: (1) a celebration of amateur astronomical research, by highlighting some recent noteworthy project results in which amateur observers have played important roles, and (2) a reminder that there is an invisible universe out there, and that we are using what we can see as a way of figuring out things that we cannot see.

Mr. Buchheim is a Trustee of the Orange County (CA) Astronomers, and is proprietor of the Altimira Observatory. He is an experienced visual observer and CCD photometrist, who has published contributions to Deep Sky magazine, presented papers at astronomy conferences, and published asteroid lightcurves in the Minor Planet Bulletin. His professional background is in engineering management for defense projects, and in that role has published a few technical papers in peer-reviewed journals. He received a BS in Physics from Arizona State University, and is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College and the UCLA Executive Management program. His book, "The Sky Is Your Laboratory" is a manual for the research-oriented amateur astronomer.
