"What's Up" presentation at the Monthly General Meeting

The OCA is lucky to have the talented Chris Butler providing the most interesting, thought provoking and even funny presentation of What's Up four times a year.

The What's Up portion of the meeting lasts for between 15 and 20 minutes and gives the audience an understanding of the what is best viewed each month. Which constellations are up and what objects can be seen. Also a run-down of the position of each of the planets and which are best viewed each month.

John Christopher "Chris" Butler

Chris Butler is an accomplished science, nature and maritime illustrator whose works have appeared in publications around the world, from the Times of London to CNN. His original art hangs in collections from Australia to Italy. Known best for his astronomical works, Chris also produces excellent ocean liner, undersea life, and dinosaur art.

Chris is a graduate of the California State University at Fullerton's television and film school, and has served as a production designer on television and film projects. Among other jobs, Chris has been a tour guide on the Queen Mary, a financial analyst on the Space Shuttle program, and a technical representative for a telescope manufacturer. In addition to his full-time career as a freelance illustrator, he is serving part time as a staff artist for the world-famous Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

An avid amateur astronomer, Chris is a regular lecturer and former Vice President of the Orange County Astronomers, one of the largest organization of its kind in the world. In addition to his hobbies of stargazing, hiking and diving, Chris is working on a novel about the Apollo lunar expeditions which his father served as an engineer on.

A gallery of his work may be seen at Here, with links to galleries which offer his work for sale.

* Please check the calendar for any changes to the date of the meeting (we often have a conflict in September/October which results in the meeting being pushed back a week).
