Special Interest Groups

With over 800 members in the club it will be no surprise to find our members enjoy a variety of different specific astronomical interests. To cater for this we have various special interest groups (SIGs). Generally the SIGs meet at least once per month in various venues.

AstroImagers

The AstroImagers are a group of members involved with AstroImaging using a wide variety of techniques and equipment. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month. The members of this group were responsible for the very successful AstroImage 2002 conference at UCI in August. More

Astrophysics

Members interested in all aspects of Astrophysics and Cosmology meet once a month on the third Friday. More

Beginners Class

The beginners class is the only SIG which is actually to the public. Meetings are generally held on the first Friday of every month. OCA Member David Pearson runs these classes. More

EOA

The Electronics Oriented Astronomers SIG is currently working on a project to build and develop a remotely operated telescope at our Anza site called the MOCAT (Multi-Function-OCA-Telescope). This group usually meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Due to the current project you may also find members of this group working out at Anza when time and project demands require it. More

ETX

The ETX "informal interest" group has been formed for those members who own one of the Meade ETX telescopes. This group meets about once every two months. Please check the calendar for details on upcoming meetings. More

Outreach

Although not formalized into a special interest group the Outreach volunteers probably meet more often than any other group. Our Outreach coordinator Jim Benet organizes a large group of member volunteers who donate their time and expertise at the many outreach events that occur throughout the month. The club members take their telescopes out to various schools, libraries and other public venues to share the wonderful experience of Astronomy with thousands of members of the public each year. Jim is always looking for additional volunteers to help spread the load. We are also always interested in considering new outreach requests from schools, scouts and other organizations. More

OCAstronomers group

This on-line only group is a place where members (and even non-members) can communicate on any topic of interest to them. More

Science

This recently formed group is a new focal point for scientific based work within the club. It's members are interested in practical research based activities using their own and the clubs telescope resources. Presently the groups activities are informal and based upon online interactions at Yahoo Groups. More
